German AI patent applications surge

The German Patent and Trademark Office (DMPA) released an analysis report on artificial intelligence innovation activities. The data showed that artificial intelligence plays an important role in many areas of life and related innovation activities continue to increase.

Data shows that the number of valid AI patents disclosed in Germany in 2023 increased by 40% compared to 2019. The growth trend in the core areas of AI is particularly obvious, including computing systems with special processing units, specific computing models of neural networks, and deep learning-related computer systems, which have more than doubled since 2019.

In addition to the core areas of AI, innovation activities in the fields of image recognition, algorithms, medical technology, transportation and automotive engineering are extremely active. Among the AI-related patent applications published in Germany in 2023, American applicants accounted for one-third with 32.4% of the applications, followed by Germany with 17.1%, Japan with 12.4%, China with 10.1%, and South Korea with 4.7%. The growth of Asian countries is the most obvious. Compared with 2022, China's patent applications published in Germany increased by 15%, South Korea also increased by 10.7%, and Japan increased by 8%.

Among the top five applicants, Germany's Robert Bosch ranked first, followed by Huawei, Google, Microsoft and Samsung Electronics.
