From northwest to southeast, Russia borders Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. Russia and Japan face each other across the Sea of Okhotsk, bordered by the Bering Strait, and adjacent to the state of Alaska in the United States. Russia is the country with the largest land area in the world, with a land area of 17,075,400 square kilometers (6,592,800 square miles), accounting for about 1/8 of the world's total land area. Russia is a member of the Eurasian Patent Convention.
