According to data released by WIPO in November, global patent application activity hit a new high in 2023. Among them, China had 1.64 million applications, the United States had 518,364 applications, Japan had 414,413 applications, South Korea had 287,954 applications, and Germany had 133,053 applications. It is the country with the largest number of patent applications in the world and has become the main driver of global growth.

Among the top 20 sources, India's patent applications increased by 15.7%, with a total of 64,480, ranking sixth in the world. In addition, India ranked among the top 10 in the three major intellectual property rankings for the first time. The number of invention patents and industrial design applications increased by more than 1 times from 2018 to 2023, and the number of trademarks increased by 60%. In addition, Finland increased by 11.2%, with both resident applications and overseas applications increasing.

Computer technology remains the most frequently appearing technology in published patent applications worldwide, accounting for 12.4% of global patent applications, followed by electrical machinery 6.8%, measurement 5.9%, medical technology 5.4% and digital communication 5.3%. Among the top ten technology fields, computer technology is the only one to achieve double-digit growth between 2012 and 2022.

The number of industrial design patent applications also reached 1.19 million in 2023, an increase of 2.8% over 2022. Chinese applicants ranked first in the world with 882,807 industrial design applications, followed by the United States with 69,076, Germany with 64,986, Italy with 60,486 and the Republic of Korea with 60,120. Among the top five sources, Italy grew by 15.7%, the fastest growth in applications in 2023. Among the top 20 sources, Indonesia had the largest increase, up 37.3%.

In 2023, the sectors with the largest shares of the global total are textiles and accessories 17.3%, furniture and household goods 16.9%, tools and machinery 11%, electricity and lighting 9.2%, and ICT and audio-visual 8.8%.
