Procedures for the validation of European patents in Norway

If a European patent is to be valid in Norway, it must go through the validation procedure at NIPO. This also applies to the European Unitary Patent. Note: Norway is not a member of the European Union and the Unitary Patent will not automatically be valid in Norway.

Effective time: Within 3 months from the receipt of the European authorization notification, the effectiveness procedures must be completed with NIPO.

Required documents:

  • EP patent application number or publication number
  • Invention Name
  • Patentee Name
  • Patentee's correspondence address
  • If the European patent is in English, the patent owner must submit a Norwegian translation of the claims; if the European patent is in German or French, the patent owner must submit: the title of the invention, the English translation of the specification and the drawings of the specification and their Norwegian translation.

Format requirements:

  • The description, claims and drawings must be submitted separately.
  • Page number at the top center of the page
  • It cannot contain agent information, PCT application number and EP patent application number.
  • The description and claims should not contain any English
  • If you use a patent agent, you must submit a power of attorney, which should include the application number or publication number, the name and address of the patent owner, and the name and address of the agent. A scanned copy will suffice.
  • Effectiveness fee: NOK 7150. Payment deadline is within 1 month after receiving the notification letter from NIPO
