Brazil's patent fees adjusted

Recently, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) announced that it will implement new official fee standards starting August 7, 2025. This adjustment is the first revision since 2012, covering core businesses such as patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. The overall increase is about 24.1% on average, and the price adjustment for some services is as high as 49%.

• Official fees such as patent application, examination, annual fees and authorization taxes have increased significantly, with some increases reaching 49%.
• From December 20, 2024, the issuance fees for patent certificates and invention supplement certificates will be abolished.
• Fees for trademark applications, oppositions, appeals and industrial design renewals could also increase by up to 49%.
• The new law will also introduce additional services and processes in the future, but the specific details are yet to be announced.
• Poor people registered with CadÚnico and applicants to the Federal Government's Disability Registry will continue to enjoy fee reductions of up to 60%, and some groups may even be completely exempt.
